3813 Euclid Avenue
Cleveland, Ohio 44115
Recapturing Cleveland's glorious past in true Millionaire's
Row style, Sammy's University
Club impresses
all with its splendidly restored grand ballroom, romantic
terrace and elegance. Built as a private residence in 1866,
the Stager-Beckwith Mansion became the University Club in
1913 and has been the center of social, business and community
events. After an investment of over $10 million in renovations
and upgrades, this stunning 15 room mansion is even more
conducive to hosting your wedding, banquet or meeting & conference.
The Sammy's University Club has over 66,000 square
feet of special event space. This includes three private
conference rooms for productive teamwork, a library for board
or conference meetings and a grand ballroom. You'll
also find a lavishly appointed executive dining room and
a variety of parlors, sunrooms, terraces and the Pub for
smaller group activities.
This is the beautiful home of Myers University. This incredibly
beautiful space will engage, energize and inspire any group.
Sammy's is honored to be at your service at Sammy's
University Club.
Timeline
| 1866 - |
Colonel Anson Stager spent $60,000 to
design and build the mansionconsisting of 15
rooms and some 10,000 square feetfor use as a personal
residence. Col. Stager was the General Superintendent
of the Western Union Telegraph Company, and had served
in the Civil War as the Chief of the U.S. Military Telegraph.
|
| 1874 - |
Col. Stager sold the residence to Thomas
Sterling Beckwith, a well-known area merchant dealing
in dry goods. In 1857, Mr. Beckwith and his brother opened
the first store in Cleveland dealing exclusively in the
sale of carpets. Their business, as well as another firm
also dealing in carpets, soon absorbed all the carpet
business in the area, and local dry goods merchants stopped
handling that line of product in their stores.
|
| 1900 - |
Beckwith sold the residence to a neighbor,
Charles Brush, the inventor of the first commercial electrical
arc light. The Brush Electric Company had previously
been sold and merged with the Edison General Electric
Company.
|
| 1913 - |
Brush sold the property to the University
Club, who remodeled and enlarged the mansion, and used
it as a social gathering place for civic events and private
parties.
|
| 2002 - |
University Club sold the property to a
group of private investors.
|
| 2003 - |
August 7 - Official ground-breaking
ceremony attended by some 325 guests, including the Mayor
of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County Commissioners and other
dignitaries. Private Partnership announced a $10 million
plan to renovate the property.
|
| 2004 - |
Fall - First events held in the renovated
facilities. Some 35 administrators and staff moved into
the facility in December, and others in 2005. Facilities
include:
- 66,000 square feet of space
- parlors
- conference rooms
- ballroom
